Worked example

A $24.99 kitchen gadget, Home and kitchen category. Say the Revenue Calculator shows an FBA fee of $4.20. It costs$6.50 from the factory plus $0.80 to get it into Amazon's warehouse, storage works out at $0.10 a unit, and the seller is on Professional selling 300 a month.

Referral fee24.99 × 0.15 = $3.75
Plan share39.99 ÷ 300 = $0.13
Amazon fees3.75 + 4.20 + 0.10 + 0.13 = $8.18
Profit24.99 − 8.18 − 6.50 − 0.80 = $9.51
Margin9.51 ÷ 24.99 = 38.0%
ROI9.51 ÷ 7.30 = 130%

Amazon keeps about a third of the price before the product is paid for. Add a dollar or two of ad cost per unit and the margin drops quickly, which is why the ad box is there.

Fees this calculator leaves to you

Storage

Amazon charges monthly storage by volume, and the rate goes up in the last three months of the year. Work out cubic feet per unit × the rate × the months a unit usually sits in stock, and put the result in the storage box.

Other FBA fees

Low-inventory, inbound placement, returns processing and removal fees can apply depending on how you send and manage stock. Seller Central shows them in your fee reports. If they are regular for a product, divide the monthly total by units sold and add it to storage.

Media categories

Books, music, video and video games have a closing fee as well as the referral fee, and are not included in the category list above.

Questions people ask

Why do I have to enter the FBA fulfillment fee myself?

Amazon sets it from the size tier and shipping weight of each item (and for some items its price), and publishes the full rate card inside Seller Central. Amazon's Revenue Calculator and the fee preview on each listing give you the exact figure for your product, including any surcharge in force. Copy it here and the calculator does the rest, so the profit is based on your real fee rather than an estimate.

How is the referral fee worked out?

It is a percentage of the total price the buyer pays, including any shipping or gift wrap, and the rate depends on the category. Some categories charge one rate for the whole price based on the price band; others charge different rates on different parts of the price. Most categories have a minimum referral fee of $0.30 per item.

Individual or Professional selling plan?

Individual costs $0.99 for each item sold; Professional is $39.99 a month. Above about 41 sales a month, Professional is cheaper, and it is needed for most advertising and brand tools.

What is a good ROI for an FBA product?

ROI here is profit divided by what you paid for the stock and to get it to Amazon. Because your money is tied up in stock for weeks or months, many sellers want a high ROI so that one slow-selling batch does not wipe out the profit of others. Decide your own minimum and stick to it when sourcing.
