Where the rates come from. PayPal: paypal.com/us/business/paypal-business-fees, checked October 9, 2026. PayPal's page says it was last updated October 1, 2026. Every rate is filled in for you but can be changed, in case your account is on a different deal.

The formulas

Fee = payment × rate + fixed fee
You receive = payment − fee
To receive X, charge (X + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate)

Worked example

A buyer pays $50.00 through PayPal Checkout.

Fee50 × 0.0349 + 0.49 = $2.24
You receive50 − 2.24 = $47.76
To receive $50(50 + 0.49) ÷ 0.9651 = $52.32

The fee is 4.5% of this payment, not 3.49%, because of the fixed 49 cents. On a $10 sale it is 8.4%. If most of your orders are small, the fixed part matters more than the percentage.

Before you add a PayPal surcharge

Some sellers add the fee to the buyer's total. Card network rules, state laws and PayPal's own terms limit how and when you can do that, and they change. Building the fee into your prices is simpler and avoids the question. To compare PayPal with Stripe on the same sale, use the Stripe and PayPal fee calculator.

Questions people ask

What is the PayPal fee for selling in the US?

For a payment through PayPal Checkout, 3.49% + $0.49 per transaction. Card payments processed through PayPal cost 2.99% + $0.49 on standard processing, or 2.89% + $0.29 on advanced processing. Payments from outside the US add 1.5%.

How much should I charge to receive $100 after PayPal fees?

Add the fixed fee to $100, then divide by 1 minus the percentage. With PayPal Checkout that is (100 + 0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0349) = $104.13. Choose "I want to receive" in the calculator and it does this for any amount.

Does PayPal charge fees on friends and family payments?

Payments to friends and family funded from a PayPal balance or bank account are generally free in the US, but they are not meant for selling and come without purchase protection. If you are being paid for goods or services, the buyer should pay as a purchase, and the seller fees above apply.

Are PayPal fees refunded when I refund a buyer?

Not always in full. Check PayPal's current refund rules for your account, and count any fee you lose on refunds as a cost of returns.
