How eBay works out its fees

Total sale = item + shipping + sales tax
Final value fee = total sale × category rate
Per-order fee = $0.30 up to $10, $0.40 above
You receive = item + shipping − all fees

The category rate covers the part of the total sale up to a threshold, usually $7,500, and a lower rate covers anything above it. For most sellers every sale is under the threshold, so it is simply one percentage.

Worked example

A $40 jacket with $8 shipping charged. The buyer pays $3.84 sales tax. You paid $15 for it and the label costs $7.20.

Total sale40 + 8 + 3.84 = $51.84
Final value fee51.84 × 0.136 = $7.05
Per-order feeorder over $10 = $0.40
Total eBay fees$7.45, 15.5% of the $48 item and shipping
You receive48 − 7.45 = $40.55
Profit40.55 − 15 − 7.20 = $18.35 (38.2%)

The fee on the tax is about 52 cents here. Small, but it is why eBay's cut is closer to 15.5% than 13.6% once shipping, tax and the order fee are counted.

Fees that catch sellers out

Below Standard

If your seller rating drops to Below Standard, eBay adds 6 percentage points to the final value fee, and more if it stays there for several months. On a $50 order that is an extra $3. Shipping on time and answering messages protects your margin as much as pricing does.

Selling abroad

Orders to buyers outside the US pay a 1.65% international fee unless you ship through eBay International Shipping.

Promoted Listings

The ad rate you set comes on top of everything else. A 5% ad rate on a 15% fee load means a fifth of the sale goes to eBay on promoted orders, so check the item can carry it before you promote.

Questions people ask

How much does eBay take from a sale?

In most categories, 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 if the order is $10 or less). The total sale includes the item price, the shipping and handling the buyer pays, and sales tax. On a typical order that works out at roughly 14 to 16% of the item price and shipping.

Why does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount the buyer pays, and that total includes the sales tax eBay collects for the state. You never receive that tax, but you still pay the percentage fee on it. It is a small amount per order, and it is why the fee on a $40 item is a little more than 13.6% of $40.

Which categories have different fees?

Books, movies and music pay a higher rate. Trading cards, coins, guitars and some collectibles pay less. Handbags, jewelry and watches pay a higher rate up to a threshold and much less above it. Athletic shoes sold for $150 or more pay 8% with no per-order fee. Pick your category in the calculator to use the right rate.

Does the calculator include Promoted Listings?

Yes, if you enter your ad rate. The ad fee is only charged when a sale comes through the promoted listing, so use your real share of promoted sales if you want an average across all orders.

Do I pay an insertion fee?

Most sellers get 250 listings a month free, then pay $0.35 per listing. Store subscriptions include more free listings. Insertion fees are charged when you list, not when you sell, so they are not part of the per-sale figure above.
