The formulas

Commission = sold price × 8%
Processing = (sold price + shipping + tax) × 2.9% + $0.30
Payout = sold price − commission − processing

Worked example

A trading card lot sells for $60 in a live show. The buyer pays $8 shipping and $4.80 tax. You paid $22 for the cards.

Commission60 × 0.08 = $4.80
Processing72.80 × 0.029 + 0.30 = $2.41
Total fees$7.21, 12.0% of the sold price
Payout60 − 7.21 = $52.79
Profit52.79 − 22 = $30.79

Live selling and your margin

Starting bids

In an auction that starts at $1, the fees are worked out on whatever the item sells for, and the 30-cent processing fee is the same whatever the price. On items that may sell for a few dollars, a higher starting bid protects you from selling at a loss.

Giveaways and show costs

Items given away to grow a show, packaging and supplies are real costs too. Add them up per show and divide by items sold to see your true cost per sale, then check it with the profit margin calculator.

Questions people ask

What fees does Whatnot charge sellers?

A 8% commission on the sold price (4% in coins and money), plus payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the total order, which includes shipping and tax. The commission does not apply to shipping or tax.

Who pays for shipping on Whatnot?

Usually the buyer, at checkout. Whatnot then provides the label. Because the shipping money goes to the label, it is not part of what you earn, but it does count towards the processing fee.

Are there lower Whatnot fees for big sales?

Whatnot has run promotions that waive commission on the part of a sale above a set amount in some categories. These change and have end dates, so check Whatnot's help center for what applies now. This calculator uses the standard rates.

Why is my Whatnot payout lower than the sold price minus 8%?

Because processing is charged as well, and on the whole order including shipping and tax. On a $60 item that adds about $2.40 to the $4.80 commission.
