What each platform charges

Etsy's costs grow with every sale. Shopify's are mostly the fixed monthly plan, so the more you sell, the further Shopify pulls ahead on fees alone.

Worked example

A $30 item with $5 shipping, 60 orders a month, $39 plan.

Etsy per order0.20 + 2.28 + 1.30 = $3.78
Etsy per month3.78 × 60 = $226.80
Shopify per order35 × 0.029 + 0.30 = $1.32
Shopify per month1.32 × 60 + 39 = $118.20
Equal at39 ÷ (3.78 − 1.32) = 15.9, so 16 orders

On fees alone, Shopify is cheaper from the 16th order of the month. The catch is in the FAQ below: those 60 orders have to come from somewhere.

How to read the result

If Etsy is cheaper

At low volume the Shopify plan costs more than Etsy's fees. Stay on Etsy, or open a Shopify store only when you have a way to bring buyers to it.

If Shopify is cheaper on fees

Put what you would spend on marketing in the extra box. If Shopify still wins, moving repeat buyers to your own store is worth testing. If not, Etsy's traffic is earning its fee.

Questions people ask

Is Shopify cheaper than Etsy?

Per sale, usually yes once you have steady orders, because Shopify's card fee is lower than Etsy's transaction and processing fees combined. But Shopify charges a monthly plan whether you sell or not, so at low volumes Etsy can cost less overall. The break-even line in the calculator shows where they cross for your prices.

What does the fee comparison leave out?

Traffic. Etsy brings shoppers to your listings; a Shopify store has to find its own through ads, social media, email or search, and that costs money or time. If you would spend $300 a month on ads to get Shopify sales, the real comparison is Etsy fees against Shopify fees plus $300.

Can I sell on both?

Many sellers do: Etsy for discovery and new customers, their own Shopify store for repeat buyers who no longer need Etsy to find them. Moving repeat customers to your own store is where most of the fee savings come from.
