Where the rates come from. Shopify: shopify.com/pricing, checked October 9, 2026. Card rates by plan follow the 2.5% to 2.9% + 30¢ range on shopify.com/blog/transaction-fees; check yours under Settings > Payments. Every rate is filled in for you but can be changed, in case your account is on a different deal.

How Shopify's fees add up

With Shopify Payments: fee = order × card rate + 30¢
With another provider: fee = order × Shopify fee % + that provider's fee
Plan cost per order = plan price ÷ orders per month

Card rates for online payments with Shopify Payments, and Shopify's own fee if you use someone else:

Basic2.9% + 30¢, or 2% with another provider
Grow2.7% + 30¢, or 1% with another provider
Advanced2.5% + 30¢, or 0.6% with another provider

Worked example

A store on the Basic plan with Shopify Payments takes a $50.00 order.

Card processing50 × 0.029 + 0.30 = $1.75
Shopify transaction fee$0.00 (none with Shopify Payments)
You keep50 − 1.75 = $48.25, before the plan price

The same order through another provider charging 2.9% + 30¢ costs that$1.75 plus Shopify's 2% ($1.00), so$2.75 in fees. At 200 orders a month that is$200 extra a month for using a different provider.

Before you pick a plan

Do the upgrade sum with your own numbers

Fill in your order size and monthly orders, note "Shopify fees per month", then switch the plan and enter that plan's price. The plan with the lower total, fees plus price, is the cheaper one for you right now.

Annual billing

Shopify discounts the plans if you pay for a year up front. Use the monthly equivalent of the annual price in the plan price box if that is how you pay.

Other fees to count

International cards and currency conversion cost extra on Shopify Payments, and chargebacks have their own fee. If a lot of your orders come from abroad, raise the card rate in "Change the rates" to match what your payouts show.

Questions people ask

Does Shopify take a percentage of every sale?

Not on top of card processing, if you use Shopify Payments. You pay the card rate for your plan (for example 2.9% + 30¢ online on Basic) and your monthly plan fee. If you use a different payment provider, Shopify adds its own transaction fee (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced) on top of what that provider charges.

Should I include the monthly plan in the cost of each order?

It helps when you are deciding on prices or comparing plans. Divide the plan price by the orders you expect in a month and you get the plan's share of each order. On a small store that share can be bigger than the card fee.

When is it worth moving up a plan?

When the lower card rate saves more than the higher plan price costs. The difference in card rate between plans is a fraction of a percent, so it takes a fair amount of monthly sales before an upgrade pays for itself on fees alone. Compare the "Shopify fees per month" line on two plans with your real sales.

Are app charges and Shopify Shipping included?

No. Paid apps, themes, shipping labels bought through Shopify and Shopify Email are billed separately. Add their monthly total to the plan price if you want them counted in the cost per order.
