Worked example
A $50 sale on the Free plan, 300 payments a month.
| In person | 50 × 0.026 + 0.15 = $1.45, you receive $48.55 |
|---|---|
| Online checkout | 50 × 0.033 + 0.30 = $1.95, you receive $48.05 |
| 300 in person a month | 1.45 × 300 = $435.00 in fees |
The same $50 online costs 50 cents more than in person on the Free plan. If most of your sales are online, the gap between the Free and paid plans is wider than for a shop that sells mostly in person.
Choosing a plan by numbers
Run your average payment and monthly count through the calculator on Free, then on Plus. The difference in "Fees per month" is what Plus saves you in processing. If that is more than Plus costs each month, the upgrade pays for itself on fees alone. If you also sell through a website, compare with the Stripe and PayPal fees.

Questions people ask
What are Square's fees?
On the Free plan: 2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ for online checkout and invoices, and 3.5% + 15¢ for keyed-in cards or cards on file. The paid Plus and Premium plans lower the in-person rate and bring online payments down to 2.9% + 30¢.
Is Square Plus worth it for the lower rates?
Only if you take enough payments. Work out your monthly fees on the Free plan and on Plus with this calculator, and compare the difference with the monthly price of Plus on Square's pricing page. Plus also includes features some stores need regardless of fees.
How much is Square's instant transfer fee?
Square charges 1.95% of the amount for an instant transfer to your bank. Standard transfers are free and arrive in one to two business days.
Why are keyed-in payments more expensive?
Typing in a card number, or charging a card on file, carries more fraud risk than a card that is tapped or inserted, so card networks and processors charge more for it.
